Toronto’s flower shop scene is growing fast, with hundreds of flower vendors flocking to the city each week.
In this episode, we talk to Toronto flower shop owner, owner of Flowers of Toronto, and Toronto’s best-selling writer, Rosemary Rose, about the city’s growing floral scene, and how she’s building the city back up.
Rosemary Rose: Hello, this is Rosemary.
I’m the owner of Roses of Toronto.
Rosemary is the author of the book “Crown Gardens: A Flower Journey,” and is a contributor to CBC’s The Gardeners.
Rose and her husband, Rick Rose, opened Flowers of Ontario in 2010 after moving to Toronto from her home in South Africa.
It’s now one of the citys best-known flower shops and a hub for Toronto’s budding flower industry.
Rose is a veteran Toronto flower seller, having been selling flowers and other items for more than 40 years.
In 2011, she opened Roses of Canada, which is now the only licensed flower shop in the country.
Rose’s passion for flowers began in childhood.
When she was young, she loved the smell of flowers and the colour of flowers, Rose says.
She started collecting and selling her own plants at age 11.
Rose says it was then that she became interested in the city of Toronto’s blossoming flower industry and began to learn more about what it was like to live in the heart of Toronto for a weekend.
In the years that followed, Rose began to discover how the flower industry was working, and in 2013 she began the Flower Industry Week tour, an annual event held at the downtown Toronto Flea Market.
Rose began selling flowers in Toronto at the Flower Festivals in June of that year, and her tours continue to this day.
Rose has been in business for more a decade, with her Toronto location expanding to include the Toronto Fleas and Toronto Flower Show.
The Rose’s are always looking for new clients and growing their client base.
“The flower industry is one of those places that people don’t know they want to go to, and I think it’s really hard to find out about it,” Rose says, adding that the Toronto flower market attracts a younger, more diverse audience than other flower festivals.
Rose continues to have the same passion for her profession and the flower trade, which she has said she wants to continue doing for the foreseeable future.
“When you are in this business, it is the best profession you can have,” she says.
“The best way to get a job is to be a professional.
It is the only way you can make money.
The only way to make money is to make a good product, so I am always looking to expand my career and grow.”
Toronto’s Flower Show draws over 30,000 visitors each year, according to the Canadian Flower Association.
Rose says that makes her very happy, and that she hopes the city continues to grow its flower community.
Rose adds that the city is a very special place, and there are a lot of people that are very loyal to their heritage and who love this city, which means it is important to grow our community.
Toronto is home to over 100,000 flower growers, and Rose is passionate about the growth of the flower community in the area.
“We have the largest number of flower shops in North America,” Rose said.
“People who love to have a good time with their flowers and want to see it grow, we’re very excited to see what’s happening.”
Rose has her own book coming out next year, which will explore the flower world and the history of the blossoming industry.
It will also explore the growing trend of flowers as a snack food.
Rose is also hoping to expand her show to other areas in Toronto, such as Montreal and Montreal’s Downtown Eastside.
Rose hopes that the new book will bring more interest and visitors to her flowers, which are very popular with kids.
Rose also hopes to continue expanding her flower show and tour beyond Toronto.
In addition to the upcoming book, Rose also hopes that she can grow the city and create a new generation of flower owners.
“I think that people in Toronto are passionate about their flowers,” Rose adds.
“I hope to grow the flower business, I hope to create a bigger flower industry in Toronto.”
Rose’s book, titled “Crowberries,” is due out in September.
